2010 Summary
- The 2010 Visual Arts Showcase featured 114 works of art in a variety of media created by Oregon artists - the largest collectin ever presented in the Library. A panel of judges selected the works for this year's Visual Arts Showcase from more than 400 submitted. The art exhibition and sale included sculpture, mised media, watercolors, oils, acrylics, photography, prints, drawings, pastels and fine craft. Awards included four $200 first place awards, and a $500 Best of Show award.
- The Beaverton Arts Commission dedicated three public art sculpture installations throught the Sculpture Program. One at Lombard Plaza by CJ Rench, a contemporary metal sculpture, titled “Caught Up”. The other two were installed on library property and at City Park. CJ Rench’s second piece, “The Gathering” can be seen in the front lawn of the library, and “Singing Sky”, the work of Wisconsin artist, Richard Taylor, is installed by the fountain of City Park. The works by CJ Rench are temporary installations, and will be on display until Summer 2011. “Singing Sky” is a permanent feature of the Community.
- In April, the Beaverton City Library added new children’s artwork to the interior of the building. The portal archway, frieze and desk panels in the Children’s Room at the library were created by Washington artist and illustrator, Bryn Barnard.
- Scholarships and Awards for Outstanding Achievement were presented to business owners, community members and students. Including two, Outstanding High School Visual Art Students and two, Outstanding Performaing Art Students will each receive a $1,000 Scholarship sponsored by the Beaverton Arts Foundation.
- The Beaverton Last Tuesday series celebrated its 7th Season! With the construction occurring at The Round, it was close, but performances went on as planned. Musiians included Key of Dreams, local favorite Michael Allen Harrison and grammy-nominated artist, Patrick Lamb. Dancing was provided by Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca, and local salsa dancers Rene Nunez and Lori Hajarizadeh. Beaverton Last Tuesday takes place from 5:00 to 8:00pm at The Round Fountain Plaza, 12600 SW Crescent St, Beaverton OR 97005.
- Ten Tiny Dances was a Beaverton Arts Commission summer feature for the second year. As an extension of the Saturday Market, 3 tiny, 4ft x 4ft stages were set up at locations around City Park. Though dance space was limited, imagination on how to use that 4ft x 4ft space was not. This series was funded by a generous grant bestowed by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.
2009 Summary
- With the help of consultants Bill Flood and Valerie Otani, the BAC completed the “Beaverton Public Art Master Plan” in April. BAC Public Art Vision: “The Public Art Project in Beaverton creates meaningful public places and enhanced civic identity through significant works of art that embrace Beaverton’s diverse traditions and history.”
- The BAC dedicated two murals as part of the Beaverton Mural Program. Both murals were dedicated in the fall of 2009, both located in Beaverton’s core dontown. The first mural, located on the South facing wall at 12590 SW Broadway St in downtown Beaverton, was created by artist Hector Hernandez with the assistance of students from Merlo Station High School. The second mural, located on the North facing wall at 12475 SW 1st in downtown Beaverton, was created by artist Gina Wilson.
- The Beaverton Arts Commissions'’s Last Tuesday Series enjoyed another successful year. 2009 performers included local Latin and jazz favotire Bobby Torres and his world - class ensemble, Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca, renowned pianist Michael Allen Harrison, singer Julianna Johnson, local salsa dancers Rene Nunez and Lori Hajarizadeh, concert rock violinist Aaron Meyer and others.
