The Beaverton Arts Commission has recently launched a new Mural Program to provide opportunities for artists to paint murals in Beaverton.
As a result, BAC is proud to announce the recent unveiling of the work of one of Beaverton’s first two recipients of Public Art Mural funding, Hector Hernandez. Gina Wilson will be unveiling her project on October 30th. The two talented mural artists were selected based on certain criteria such as: Accessibility, Artist Quality, Contemporary Relevance, Feasibility, Originality, Permanence, Scale, Suitability and Technical proficiency. The links below open documents outlining the criteria in greater detail.
Hector Hernandez, a 20-year veteran of large-scale murals, selected the back wall of the Happy Monkey Café, 12590 SW Broadway. The destination is located at the intersection of SW Farmington and SW Watson.
Gina Wilson selected the north facing concrete wall at the back of Ickabod’s Tavern, 12475 SW 1st, which parallels the drive-up to the US Bank teller window.
The mural review committee is comprised of 9 talented, influential people within the arts community. They are:
The public art mural program is a city–wide program administered by the Beaverton Arts Commission (BAC) as part of its Public Art Program. The Beaverton City Council voted in April 2008 to exempt all public art from the City’s sign code and create a public art program for display of art on public rights of way and on private building facades and other private property under the terms of easements to be granted to the City for that purpose. New murals are reviewed by the Public Art Selection Committee, a standing committee that is responsible for overseeing the City’s Public Art Mural Program. Committee members include a representative from the City and the Arts Commission, as well as artists, arts patrons, a City resident and an experienced muralist. The program has a matching grant fund opportunity available.
