American Readers Theatre is a not for profit performing arts organization that promotes literacy through the art of dramatic readings. Founded in 1989 by professional acting coach and director Jeffrey Stocker the inaugural production was held at the National Arts Club located in New York City with a reading of the award-winning play “Night Mother” read by Broadway Tony Award winners Kelly Bishop and Crista Moore.
Jeffrey Stocker moved to the Portland area this past October and has brought A.R.T with him. A.R.T has begun a collaboration with the Portland Festival Ballet where acting classes and workshops in the art of dramatic readings will be taught by Mr. Stocker. Mr. Stocker has also created a similar program for the Joffrey Ballet School in NYC and the Magnus Midwest Dance Summer Dance Intentsive in Flint Michigan. CHARLOTTE’S WEB is freely adapted from the E.B.White classic children’s novel. Mr. Stocker has directed this adaptation most recently in New York City for the Harlem 40 and the Pike County Public Library located in Milford, Pennsylvania. Mr. Stocker calls this production “a play for voices” since the cast of 6 reads over 20 different characters. The actors reading CHARLOTTE’S WEB are dancers and parents of the students that are currently involved at the Portland Festival Ballet School. Mr. Stocker believes that to “read aloud is an art in itself” and “to learn to love to read and share that love of reading to others is a great gift”. Please join the Beaverton City Library, Beaverton Arts Commission and the American Readers Theatre-Portland Festival Ballet to bring the words and story of CHARLOTTE’S WEB alive.
